At least nine people died on the roads over the bank holiday weekend amid widespread travel disruption.

Five people died on Easter Monday including two men, aged 34 and 37, were killed after a crash involving a car which was driving the wrong way down the M62 near Bradford.

Their bodies were found in the wreckage of a white Skoda Octavia at the scene in the early hours of Monday morning.

The 22-year-old driver of a black Vauxhall Insignia failed a breath test and was arrested for causing death by dangerous driving.

A 70-year-old man also died after he was hit by a Vauxhall Zafira as he walked along a promenade in Swanage.

A Dorset Police spokesman confirmed he live in the coastal town. The driver of the car, a local woman in her 60s, suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution, they said.

Elsewhere a driver was killed and his passengers seriously injured after his car slid off the M25 and smashed into a tree on Easter Monday morning.

Another man has died after an early-morning lorry crash on the M5 near Birmingham. The 61-year-old was taken to hospital but died from his injuries, West Midlands Police said.

A truck also hit a barrier on the motorway before slowing to a stop. Junctions two to three southbound for Oldbury and Halesowen were closed as result.

In the early hours of Easter Sunday, 21-year-old Kavana Taylor from Rochdale, died when he was crashed into a Volkswagen Polo. Flowers were laid at the crash site where friends and family have gathered to pay tribute

Kieran Edgar, 18, also died on Easter Sunday, after he lost control of his moped in Billingham, County Durham. Police have appealed for anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the crash to come forward.

On the same day a man, who has not been named but is believed to be in his 20s was killed in Essex when he was hit by a car while lying in the road near Halstead.

Police appealed for witnesses and described the incident as a "tragic incident".

A father-of-three, Karl Chester, also died on the M62 after his motorcycle collided with a blue Nissan Qashqai near Scammonden Reservoir, Rishworth Moor on Good Friday. The 36-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

There was widespread travel disruption over the weekend as the Met Office issued yellow weather warnings for parts of the UK.

Several roads were closed and network rail faced difficulties are tracks flooded across the country.
