In an article on Boxing Day 1994, we suggested that the Irish bishops had been aware of the activities of the paedophile priest Fr Brendan Smyth for the past 25 years. This is untrue. We apologise for the mistake. As Cardinal Daly's statement of 5
December 1994 makes clear, he contacted the head of the Norbertine Order, to which Fr Smyth belonged, as soon as the allegations came to his attention, in February 1990; and again in March 1990, February 1991 and August 1992. On all occasions, Abbot Kev in Smith, Fr Smyth's superior, undertook to deal effectively with the matter.
