A crackdown on multiple membership applications was agreed by conference, after disclosures that 200 Asians had tried to join Gerald Kaufman's Manchester Gorton constituency party. The NEC wanted to ensure that applicants were on the electoral register, to prevent people moving around the country, joining local parties and voting on key issues.
