Timothy Purcell, 23, of no fixed address, was due to appear in court today accused of trying to kill PC Colin McManus in Edgware, north-west London, on Friday. He is also charged with attempted burglary. Ronald Actil, 22, of Hackney, east London, was also due to appear, charged with attempted burglary.

PC McManus was said to be 'stable and continuing to improve' in hospital where he was treated for knife wounds.
