A man was shot in the chest and then attacked with machetes by five masked men outside Moss Side Precinct in Manchester yesterday.

After abandoning his car, which he crashed into parked vehicles while trying to escape the gang, Peter Pegnado, 31, flagged down another and was driven to hospital, where he underwent life-saving surgery. Last night he was in a stable condition.
