BBC radio will broadcast seven instead of six 'pips' at 1am tonight as the Greenwich Time signal adds a 'leap second' to the day. The additional 'pip' - making tomorrow the longest day of the year - prevents highly accurate atomic clocks getting out of step with the rotation of the earth.
