Michael Longley was born in Belfast in 1939. He has published more than 14 collections, the most recent of which, Gorse Fires (Secker & Warburg, 1992) won the Whitbread Poetry Prize. Fleadh was first published in Man Lying On A Wall: Poems 1972-1975 (Gollancz). This poem is featured in The Given Note exhibition which explores the links between poetry and traditional Irish music. Photographs by Christy McNamara and poems chosen by Michael Donaghy can be seen at the Poetry Library, Royal Festival Hall (inquiries: 071 921 0664) until 11 September.
