Three men who died in a collision between a car and a horsebox that was driven by the former international show jumper Harvey Smith on Saturday in North Yorkshire were named yesterday as Andrew Gowland, 30, and Gary Hayton, 31, both of Leeds; and Ernest Larvin, 37, of Knaresborough. Mr Larvin's son Daniel, six, suffered head injuries and was last night in a critical condition in hospital. Andrew Fulcher, 17, of Knaresborough, who was also in the car, had minor injuries.
Mr Smith, who was uninjured, was questioned by police and released on bail for a month pending further inquiries. An inquest into the deaths will open today in Harrogate.
