As visitors to Wimbledon and Glastonbury have probably already guessed, England and Wales are facing the wettest June this century, with the deluge showing no sign of relenting.
June's rainfall, with an average 117mm, is already the third highest since 1900 and forecasters are predicting it could be the wettest June since 1879.
Wimbledon fans yesterday faced a second successive washout of play, while a possible "People's Sunday", to try to make up the backlog of matches, may also fall victim to the weather, as yet more rain is forecast for the rest of the weekend.
At Glastonbury in Somerset, knee-deep mud awaited fans heading to the first day of the rock festival. Wind and rain has left the 800-acre site "a sea of soup", but organisers said it would not be cancelled.
