PORT-AU-PRINCE - The United States yesterday denied rumours of a plot to kill President Jean-Bertrand Aristide that had sent thousands of angry Haitians into the streets brandishing sticks and machetes. The White House said the finding of weapons in the car of Haiti's army commander, Major-General Jean-Claude Duperval, when he arrived at the National Palace did not indicate an assassination plan.
Father Aristide left the presidential palace for the first time since his return to Haiti on Saturday and a crowd mobbed his motorcade. Reuter
