Australia has loosened its controversial policy of mandatory detention for asylum seekers who arrive by boat.

It freed free 27 people from overcrowded, prison-like conditions yesterday and said 100 would be released each month.

The move was welcomed by human-rights groups, which have strongly criticised the 20-year-old policy as inhumane – although it remains popular among many Australians.
