China frees Tibet activists

ATibetan human rights activist, Gendun Rinchen, who was arrested last May for attempting to pass information on abuses to visiting European Union diplomats, has been released, according to Amnesty International, writes Raymond Whitaker.

Mr Rinchen, a tour guide, and Lobsang Yonten, a former Buddhist monk also freed this week, were charged by the Chinese authorities with 'stealing state secrets', which is punishable by death. Both were held in solitary confinement for eight months. It is not known whether the charges have been dropped.
