China's paramount leader, Deng Xiaoping, who will be 89 next month, underwent surgery last month for testicular cancer in a Peking military hospital, a leading Japanese newspaper, Yomiuri Shimbun, reported yesterday.

Quoting Western sources, it said Mr Deng returned to his Peking home, where he was resting.
