STOCKHOLM (AFP) - The Chinese interim consul-general in St Petersburg and his wife has defected to Sweden and requested asylum, the Swedish Foreign Ministry said.

Wang Li Ji and his wife arrived by boat after leaving Russia at the weekend. They reported to police and requested asylum. In St Petersburg, Major-General Arkady Kramarev said: 'The acting consul-general of China in St Petersburg . . . has chosen freedom.'
