JOHANNESBURG - An inquest into the death of a prominent anti-apartheid activist heard yesterday that a former member of a covert army unit had confessed to a role in one of South Africa's most notorious political killings, Reuter reports.

Police warrant officer Wessel Rossouw told the judicial inquest's opening session that a former army agent, Ferdi Barnard, had told a police informant he had been involved in the 1 May 1989 shotgun killing of the pro-democracy academic David Webster.
