PHNOM PENH (Reuter) - Japanese military officers dressed in business suits arrived in Cambodia yesterday to plan the deployment of the first troops to be sent overseas by Tokyo since the Second World War.
Japan is expected to send between 500 and 700 engineers to rebuild roads and bridges in a country wrecked by more than two decades of political turmoil and war. They will join more than 15,000 soldiers from other nations already deployed under the banner of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC).
The delegation will stay in Cambodia until 19 August.
