Iran compensated for downing of plane

Washington - The United States and Iran announced a $131.8m (pounds 90m) settlement of Iranian claims against the US, including compensation for the 1988 shooting-down of an Iranian airliner that killed 290 people. The State Department said no US money would go to Iran's government. Tehran announced it as payment to Iran. The Iranian government news agency also reported $30m of the payment was to compensate for the lost airliner. The State Department said $61.8m will go to the families of Iranians killed in the downing of the airliner. AP
