A Beirut opposition daily, closed for a week by the Lebanese government, appeared under a new name yesterday amid growing concern about press freedom. The left-wing as-Safir was published as Beirut al-Massa, a title whose publishing rights were owned by a Communist leader, Mohsen Ibrahim, Reuter reports from Beirut.

A state prosecutor ordered al-Safir to close for a week on Wednesday for printing a draft of an Israeli proposal made at the Middle East peace talks in Washington. The daily was the third opposition newspapr or television closed in the past two weeks.
