Singapore (Reuter) - The former deputy prime minister Ong Teng Cheong won yesterday's poll to become Singapore's first elected president with 59 per cent of the vote. The election was widely regarded as a test of the popularity of the long-ruling People's Action Party (PAP). Mr Ong, a former PAP chairman, had been endorsed by the party.
