Oslo - A 41-year-old Norwegian has become the first woman in the world to reach the South Pole alone. Liv Arnesen arrived at the South Pole on Saturday after trudging 745 miles in 50 days.

Ms Arnesen, who pulled a sledge weighing 50kg and carried a backpack of 15kg, will be airlifted from the Pole on 6 January. Americans at a research base invited her in for brunch. Reuter
