The German Foreign Minister, Klaus Kinkel, welcomed the release by Iraq of a German national, describing it as a humanitarian gesture, Reuter reports from Bonn.
The Iraqi President, Saddam Hussein, earlier ordered the release of Kai Sondermann, 28, who was arrested for straying into Iraq from Kuwait last May. He was sentenced to eight years in jail, of which he served six months. A Frenchman serving a similar sentence was also freed from jail on President Saddam's orders.
