Togo's President, Gnassingbe Eyadema, was re-elected with an overwhelming 92 per cent of the vote in elections boycotted by the opposition, Reuter reports from Lome. Opponents with a chance of ending Mr Eyadema's 26-year rule stayed on the sidelines during Wednesday's poll. The supreme court barred Gilchrist Olympio, a strong contender, from standing because he did not submit medical certificates signed by Togolese doctors. Two other viable challengers, Edem Kodjo and Yaovi Agboyibo, boycotted the poll, saying it was not properly organised, voter lists were inflated and security was inadequate. US and German electoral observers pulled out before the poll, saying that without an opposition there was nothing to observe.
