(Samuel Adeloju / James Dyson Award)

The International James Dyson awards opened to entries on Tuesday, April 5 - talented designers and engineers now have until August 2 to submit their design and potentially win £10,000 (€11,451).

The James Dyson Award is an international student design competition run by the James Dyson Foundation - an educational foundation named after inventor and head of the Dyson company - James Dyson.

The competition, now in its second year, is open to product or industrial design and engineering university level students and post-graduates of less than four years from over 18 countries - covering the majority of Europe, the United States, parts of East Asia and Oceania. For a full list of countries and entry conditions see http://www.jamesdysonaward.org/Prize.aspx.

This year entrants are tasked with designing "something that solves a problem;" national winners and finalists will be announced September 6 and the overall winner will be announced November 8.

In 2010 the winner of the James Dyson Award was Samuel Adeloju who designed the Longreach - a portable device capable of shooting an emergency buoyancy aid 152.4 meters (500 feet) out to sea.

Full details of the competition can be found at: http://www.jamesdysonaward.org

Industrial design students from around the world were also asked to create a home appliance that "consider[s] intelligent mobility" as part of the 2011 Electrolux Design Lab competition. The deadline for applications to the Electrolux competition is May 5 and finalists are expected to be announced in July of this year. For more information see: http://www.electroluxdesignlab.com
