A young Spanish winner in Spain? The story may be familiar, but the name is not. Diego Borrego, a 24-year-old from Marbella, beat Zimbabwe's Tony Johnstone at the third extra hole to win his maiden title at the Turespana Masters.
A week after Raymond Russell won in Cannes, Borrego, who holed crucial putts at the first two play-off holes, became the fifth first-time winner of the season with a chip-and-putt par at the 17th. Johnstone, who had holed from eight feet at the 18th to tie both Borrego's final-round 69 and 17-under total, bogeyed when he missed from six feet.
"I can't believe what I have done," Borrego, who had not finished better than eighth before, said. "I am going to take the week off to enjoy the feeling."
Peter Baker finished four shots adrift in third after a 69 in which he did well not to be disturbed by his playing partners. Sam Torrance had a triple-bogey seven at the first, while Andrew Coltart suffered a quintuple- bogey 10 at the third, which included a free drop from a rabbit hole, a lost ball and an air shot.
Baker, who has not won for three years, is on an alcohol ban after being diagnosed with hepatitis and pneumonia in February. "I have two weeks to go, but I would have broken it if I had won; third is not good enough," he said.
