Barrie Clarke, the Team Raleigh professional from Surrey, was the surprise winner of yesterday's British Open cyclo-cross championship at Birmingham, after Roger Hammond, the defending champion, was relegated to sixth place.

British Open Championship (Sutton Park, Birmingham) 14 miles: 1 B Clarke (Team Raleigh) 58:32; 2 S Douce (PCA) 7sec behind; 3 N Craig (Diamond Back) same time; 4 J Norfolk (VC ST Raphael) 41sec; 5 M Guy (BBCA) 52sec; 6 R Hammond (S Western RC) 1:12.
