The super-heavyweight Alexis Rubalcaba made an instant impact on his Olympic boxing debut on Saturday, bloodying and then beating the Italian Paolo Vidoz to become the seventh Cuban to reach the quarter-finals. The United States took their tally to six quarter-finalists with an impressive showing by the featherweight Floyd Mayweather.

Rubalcaba stopped Vidoz after 2min 39sec. The Italian, bleeding from the nose, went down for an eight-count before coming back for more punishment. Rubalcaba then clubbed Vidoz repeatedly with his right, forcing the referee to halt the contest.

The professional trainer Lou Duva and promoter Shelley Finkel were among the crowd that watched Mayweather overwhelm the Armenian Artur Gevorgyan 16-3 after he ran away with the first round, 9-1.
