Arsenal produced a battling performance at the Allianz Arena as they went down to a 1-0 defeat in their Women’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich.

Lea Schuller’s first-half header saw Bayern home, yet Arsenal will fancy their chances of turning the tie around in next week’s return.

They created a number of opportunities, being denied by goal-line clearances and the woodwork as Bayern ultimately did enough to record a 13th-successive victory in all competitions this season.

Arsenal, though, showed more than enough to suggest that a semi-final appearance for the first time since 2013 was not beyond them.

Lea Schuller’s first-half header saw Bayern home, yet Arsenal will fancy their chances of turning the tie around in next week’s return.

Lea Schuller rises to leave Arsenal looking short of finishing edge

Jonas Eidevall said there were a lot of similarities between his Arsenal team and Bayern Munich but by the end of the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final there was one clear difference. While Lea Schuller took her chance with a thunderous back-post header, Arsenal missed a hat full of their opportunities, hit the post, had two cleared off the line and, after an entertaining back-and-forth contest at the Allianz Arena, it was advantage Bayern.

There is plenty to suggest that with a bit more fortune and a cooler head Arsenal can find the goals they need to turn the tie around at the Emirates in next week’s second leg. On the balance of play, the Gunners will take confidence from how they were able to dominate Bayern in spells and create several chances in the second half. But Schuller’s excellent header threatens the real danger of Arsenal being made to regret not strengthening their attacking options in January, following those devastating injuries to Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema.

Once Arsenal get those missed chances out of their heads they will take confidence with how they were able to play in the second half. That said, there Gunners is a real danger Arsenal are made to regret not strengthening their attacking options in January after those injuries to Mead and Miedema.
