Boxing: Froch can produce upset for Adamu

After only 11 fights, Carl Froch will try to win a genuine title when he meets Ghana's Charles Adamu for the Commonwealth super-middleweight championship at the Nottingham Arena tonight.

Froch is arguably one of the best young boxers in the United Kingdom. Since turning professional two years ago, he steadily improved against a list of quality opponents and starts tonight's fight with a good chance of upsetting the form book.

Adamu has fought in Britain before, when he won the vacant Commonwealth title by outpointing Matthew Barney last summer. Since that night Barney has won the WBU light-heavyweight world title, but Froch is determined to add the British and European belts to his collection before fighting for one of the more prestigious world championships.

Adamu has lost just one of his last 12 fights and that was to the unbeaten Ukrainian Vitaly Tsypko in a tough contest last month. In theory, Froch will be the fresher of the two but the 26-year-old is good enough anyway to beat Adamu without any obvious advantages.

The British heavyweight champion, Michael Sprott, will make the first defence of his title against the unbeaten Matt Skelton at the Rivermead Leisure Centre in Reading on 24 April. Before that, another British heavyweight, Audley Harrison, will have his fight with Richel Hersisia at Wembley Arena a week on Saturday, to be transmitted live by the British Forces Broadcasting Services.

* Mike Tyson could launch his latest comeback in China later this year, according to the Chinese government. Tyson is scheduled to visit the country and is reported to be lining up a fight with an unnamed Russian boxer.
