World Cup final referee Howard Webb and the Ryder Cup hero Graeme McDowell are both created MBE in the New Year Honours list today.
An MBE for Webb, 39, is the climax of a year in which the match official from Rotherham was chosen to referee both the World Cup final and the Champions League final.
In addition to making the winning putt for Europe in the Ryder Cup, McDowell won the US Open this year.
There is a knighthood for Martin Broughton, Liverpool's independent chairman during the club's turbulent takeover, and a CBE for Francis Baron, the former RFU chief executive.
