The Italian Formula One driver, Vincenzo Polli, was killed in a high-speed crash here yesterday during the final round of the World Championship.
The 37-year-old Polli died after his boat collided with Jari Honkala's boat during the 12th lap of the scheduled 50-lap race. The Swede escaped with a broken arm.
Polli, who was pulled unconscious from his boat, was the third driver to suffer fatal injuries in Abu Dhabi since the Gulf emirate began hosting the race in 1993.
The race was called off after leader and world champion-elect Guido Cappellini, of Italy, retired a few laps later, saying poor visibility caused by bright sunshine made racing too dangerous.
