A gelding operation lay behind the success of Ancient World in the £100,000 William Hill Mile at Goodwood yesterday. The Godolphin runner became the first winning favourite in the 17-year history of the race.

Despite top weight of 9st 10lb in the 21-runner contest, the 9-2 shot - ridden by Frankie Dettori - beat Impeller by a length and a quarter.

Trainer Saeed Bin Suroor revealed that a gelding operation since the horse's last start had been the key to a change in Ancient World. "In Dubai he worked like a Group horse, but he was always jumpy and upset at the track. Now he has lost some weight and he looks much better and happier."
