Sailing: Rogers adds to success

It has been a winning week for the Lymington yachtsman Simon Rogers, who on Saturday won the top trophy in the Round the Island Race, beating nearly 1,600 other yachts to take the Gold Roman Bowl for the second year in succession. Just days before he had been one of a trio to set a new record for circumnavigating Britain in a 29-foot powerboat.

Last year his father Jeremy had been on board the boat he designed and built 30 years ago, a Contessa 26 called Rosina of Beaulieu, but this year he left it to his three sons, Simon, Kit and David.

They delivered in style on a day which provided almost perfect conditions. The first multihull to finish was the current record-holder, Francis Joyon's Eure et Loire, and the first monohull was Mike Slade's Leopard, but both will have to wait another year to set new records. The Class One tussle was won by Kit Hobday's Bear of Britain from Peter Harrison's Chernikeeff 2. That battle will continue in next month's Admiral's Cup.
