Morgan stays in fine form to secure second place

Becky Morgan put on a tremendous show but had to settle for a career-best second place in the LPGA Classic in Atlantic City, New Jersey, yesterday.

The 28-year-old from Wales shot a second successive 66 for an aggregate 13-under-par 200, but she finished three shots behind Angela Stanford. The American was a worthy winner of her first Tour title with a best of day six-under-par 65 that began birdie, birdie, eagle, but Morgan had the consolation of her biggest pay day, £79,000.

She had five birdies, the most important coming from 18 feet at the final hole which helped her edge home one ahead of Canada's Lorie Kane and Juli Inkster, who defends the US Women's Open starting in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday.

Morgan, who lost to Norway's Suzann Pettersen in a play-off for the French Open on the European Tour as a rookie two years ago, has had four top-10 finishes in five weeks, and has thrust herself into contention for a Solheim Cup debut in Sweden in September. But she said: "I'm not looking that far ahead - I'm just very happy with the way I am playing at the moment."

Joanne Morley, from Cheshire, boosted her season with a tie for eighth place after a final round 72 for 206.

* David Toms became the seventh multiple winner on the PGA Tour this season after a seven-under-par 64 gave him a 20-under-par 264 aggregate and a three-stroke victory over Zimbabwe's Nick Price at the St Jude Classic in Memphis. The third-round leader, Richard Johnson, shared third with his fellow Swede Fredrik Jacobson and Bob Estes on 268.
