Lottery reaches first base

With the billion-pound landmark looming - present handouts total over pounds 995m - Sport England's lottery largesse has finally reached first base. Brighton Baseball Club, the national champions, are the recipients of the first-ever grant to the sport, a cheque for pounds 11,222 autographed by Trevor Brooking in his role as sport's Fairy Godfather winging its way towards the South Coast resort. The money will be used for provide a new diamond for junior players.
