Kafelnikov knocked out by qualifier

The Spanish qualifier Roberto Carretero continued his remarkable run of form at the German Open in Hamburg yesterday when he beat the Russian third seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov 7-5 6-2 to reach the final. Carretero, playing his eighth match within a week, showed strong nerves and clay-court baseline skills to clinch the biggest win of his career. The world's 143rd-ranked player used his powerful forehand to the full to battle back from 4-1 down to take the first set. After breaking Kafelnikov's serve in the first game of the second set he finished off his opponent in just 74 minutes. In today's final he meets another unseeded player, his compatriot Alex Corretja, who yesterday beat Marcelo Rios, the fifth-seeded Chilean.
