Britain's Colin McRae built up a comfortable lead yesterday on the second day of the Indonesian rally, as a fierce battle developed for second place. McRae had been under no pressure since the Finnish Mitsubishi driver Tommi Makinen retired after damaging his car on Friday. But he did have a scare on the 15th stage after a thunderstorm turned the roads to mud and he crashed his Subaru into a bank. "You just have to find a pace you're happy with," McRae said. "I don't want to slow down too much. I want to keep the gap as it is." McRae is leading the Finn Juha Kankkunen by 3 minutes 38 seconds. A furious three-way battle for second place is running in Kankkunen's favour thanks to a fine performance in the mud after two days of the three-day rally, Asia's first world championship event. The Toyota driver leapt to second from fourth place in two stages.
