The London 2012 Games will benefit rather than suffer from the decision to scrap the international leg of the torch relay, according to Britain's International Olympic Committee member Sir Craig Reedie.

The IOC decided after the controversial Beijing torch relay in 2008 to make it a domestic event only, and the details of the route will be announced this morning.

Reedie said: "People used the torch as an opportunity for protest [before Beijing] when it should really be an opportunity for peaceful celebration. That's why the decision was taken by the IOC to make it a domestic relay and I think that can only benefit London and Britain."
