Lester Piggott may make a one-off return to race-riding as captain of an international team of jockeys taking part in a celebrity race at Gosforth racecourse in Johannesburg on 17 February. If any of the provisional squad of Cash Asmussen, Willie Carson, Lanfranco Dettori, Pat Eddery and Michael Kinane fails to make the trip, Piggott will ride.
The 11-times champion announced his retirement from the saddle only a month ago, shortly before his 60th birthday. "This is not a comeback in the true sense of the word," Piggott's daughter Tracey said. "He will only be riding in a one-off celebrity race. He is enjoying his retirement and there is no question of his making an official comeback."
