Vernon Pugh will resign as the Welsh Rugby Union chairman if the go- ahead is not given to appoint a salaried head of national coaching.
Pugh last night outlined his blueprint for the future of rugby in the principality after Wales' failure to qualify for this weekend's quarter- finals. Alex Evans, the Australian-born coaching organiser at the Cardiff club, who was caretaker Welsh coach for this tournament, could be head- hunted as the man to do the job.
"We must have one person in charge of our whole national coaching structure," Pugh said. "I see it as a major plank in what is required for a better future. He would be responsible for a consistency of coaching style and pattern of play; development of individual skills and overall organisation of the five national squads... but if it does not happen I am going to quit."
