Racing: For the Notebook: A weekly list of horses to follow

PROVENCE: ninth in the Cesarewitch last year, Peter Harris's gelding started at 25-1 on his reappearance in testing conditions at Kempton on Saturday. Despite needing the race, the seven-year-old made up considerable ground in the home straight to finish a close fourth to Admiral's Well. His chance would have to be respected in staying handicaps of two miles or more, particularly on a faster surface. (P W Harris)

SET THE FASHION: appeared unlucky when a fast-finishing second to Tawafij in a seven-furlong event at Doncaster on Saturday, losing out by a neck. Could be seen travelling comfortably behind the leaders but the five-year-old's jockey delayed making a challenge until after the winner had stolen first run. This Hunt Cup entry for Royal Ascot appears well handicapped. (Lord Huntingdon)

WOT-IF-WE: finished full of running when pulling three-lengths clear of his nearest pursuer to win at Lingfield on Saturday evening. Started at 16-1, but apparently did not go unbacked. The opposition was admittedly moderate, but this February-foaled colt could be stepped up in grade and still win again. Soft ground may well be necessary for him to display his best form, however.
