DESERT ZONE: held up in the rear until ran on in the home straight to finish fourth of 16 in the one-mile handicap won by Mentalasanythin on the sand at Southwell last Tuesday. This four-year-old can get his head in front when more forceful tactics are adopted or longer distances are tried. (J L Harris)

DONT TELL THE WIFE: promising display at Folkestone last Tuesday when, on his first run for 10 weeks, made good headway to join the leaders on the home turn. Faded approaching the last flight of hurdles, eventually finishing only eighth to Happy Horse. But that 2m 6 1/2 f race was stretching his stamina too far. (Mrs D Haine)

EVERALDO: becomes a 10- year-old on New Year's Day but this high quality hurdler has been lightly raced. In a first public run for 14 months on Saturday, he carried top weight into fourth place behind Bellezza in a strongly-run Ascot amateur riders' hurdle. Was eased in the closing stages and clearly retains his ability. (N Henderson)
