Racing: Weaver will not appeal

Despite the success of Michael Hills, Jason Weaver has decided not to appeal against a seven-day ban imposed by the Beverley stewards on Monday for irresponsible riding. The ban runs from 31 July to 6 August, which means Weaver will miss the last four days of Glorious Goodwood next week.

Weaver made his decision after consulting with his retained trainer, Mark Johnston. "It was a very hard decision," Johnston said. "As a matter of principle, I would have appealed. I didn't feel that the stewards took into account the side-on film.

"At the same time, we felt the chances of success were not worth Jason taking another day off from riding. He is having enough days off as it is."

Mick Channon was fined pounds 750 by the Jockey Club's Disciplinary Committee yesterday for a passport mix up that prevented Bride's Reprisal, owned by the wife of Kevin Keegan, running at York in May.
