Rowing

The former England rugby player Andy Ripley has had to accept defeat in his quest to row in the University Boat Race. Ripley, now a Cambridge student who turned 50 last month, failed to make the cut as the 45-strong squad was trimmed to 19 rowers and three coxes after a training camp in Spain. The final selection will take place on 23 February.
