Briton Liam Broady defeated in US Open boys' final

Liam Broady's attempt to keep the US Open boys' title in British hands ended in disappointment here last night when he was beaten 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 in the final by Canada's Filip Peliwo. Broady was attempting to follow in the footsteps of both Oliver Golding (2011) and Andy Murray (2004) by winning the tournament. The only time British boys have ever won back-to-back Grand Slam titles was when Bobby Wilson and Billy Knight won the Wimbledon junior titles in 1952 and 1953.

Broady, aged 18, recovered well from a first set in which he served eight double faults, but Peliwo made the decisive break of serve in the penultimate game of the deciding set. The 18-year-old Canadian also won the Wimbledon boys' title and was runner-up at the French and Australian Opens. He is the first player since Stefan Edberg to reach the finals of all four junior Grand Slam events.

Broady (right), who was also runner-up in the Wimbledon junior event last year, and his sister, Naomi, have grown up largely outside the Lawn Tennis Association's development programmes following a controversy in 2007. Naomi and another British player uploaded on to a social networking website some ill-advised photographs of themselves after a night out in which they had drunk alcohol, after which the LTA withdrew Naomi's funding temporarily.

The Broadys subsequently based themselves at Patrick Mouratoglou's academy in Paris. Attempts to bring them back into the LTA fold were rebuffed for a long time, but since Wimbledon Liam has been training at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, where he works with the coach Mark Hilton, although he still spends some time in Paris.
