ANDREW HARRIMAN delivered a riposte to the English officials who were dismissive about the rugby union World Cup Sevens. He inspired a scratch England side to a 21-17 victory at Murrayfield against an Australia team fielding the likes of Campese, Lynagh and Ofahengaue.

Neil Thomas, raised the domestic profile of gymnastics with a silver in the floor exercises in the World Championships at Birmingham.

Eamonn Martin increased his income by about pounds 60,000 with success in his debut at the distance in the London Marathon. Liz McColgan came third in the women's race.

The week started well for Arsenal footballer Ian Wright, who was on the winning side as Sheffield Wednesday were beaten 2-1 in the Coca-Cola Cup final, and he took his season's goal total to 27 in Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest. But a broken toe means he misses England's World Cup game with the Netherlands at Wembley on 28 April as he fights to be fit for next month's FA Cup final.
