The Week in Review

LINFORD CHRISTIE, the British men's athletics team captain, narrowly missed out on the 100 metres world record at Stuttgart. However, by winning Britain's first gold medal at the championships he added the 100m world championship to his European, Commonwealth and Olympic titles. The women's captain, Sally Gunnell won Britain's second gold medal and broke the world record in the 400m hurdles final. In the 110m hurdles Colin Jackson did the same double of a world record on the way to gold.

Fortune finally smiled on Damon Hill. After being forced to withdraw while leading two races this season, his Renault-Williams stayed the course as he drove to his maiden victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Graeme Hick was recalled for England's final Test against Australia at The Oval. His contribution of 80 was the highest as England passed 300 for only the second time this summer.

Graeme Obree showed it is more than an unorthodox cycling style and a penchant for incorporating washing machine parts into his bike that has brought him sudden fame as he broke the world 4,000m pursuit title, twice.
