The years since the women's world gymnastics title was successfully defended. The gold medal won by America's Shannon Miller, 17, in Brisbane yesterday was the first time the overall champion had retained her crown since Ludmilla Tourischeva, of the Soviet Union, in 1974. Miller edged out Romania's Lavinia Milosovici by just .038 points.
