THE number of screws the swimmer Jenny Thompson had in a titanium plate in her arm when she won the 100m freestyle in the US National Championships on Sunday. Thompson, the world record holder, broke her left arm in a water-slide accident at a college fraternity party in May. She had more than 100 stitches during surgery on 3 June, and was told by doctors she might not be able to compete for the rest of the season. She missed just 10 days' training.
