Lord Wyatt, the Tote chairman, yesterday defended the decision to switch the Jackpot from Goodwood to yesterday evening's meeting at Epsom as "a perfectly rational, sensible commercial decision".

The Tote had come under fire for moving the jackpot to a minor fixture from the second day of Glorious Goodwood, which draws crowds of 20,000 and a television audience of 1.5m.

Lord Wyatt, interviewed by Julian Wilson on BBC1, said Epsom "was the place where we think it is least likely to be won", and a big carry-over created.
