1975: ASHE V CONNORS

One of the major upsets. Arthur Ashe outsmarted Jimmy Connors, the reigning champion, to win the final in four sets. It was a clever victory because Ashe played in a totally different style to the one to which he was accustomed. He usually played from the back of the court, but knew this was the game on which Connors thrived. If he wanted to win, he would have to change tack and come in to the net. He did. And the ploy worked wonders, catching Connors by surprise. At one point a spectator yelled out: "Come on Jimmy." He yelled back: "I'm trying, for Christ's sake." Try as Connors might, Ashe won 6-1 6-1 5-7 6-4.
